Principle 5: Optimism
True leadership requires belief and confidence that the dream is possible, that the vision can be achieved. The principle of optimism is about the mindset of progress, learning and growth (a growth mindset), and about the ability to instil confidence in others that, even in the complexity of today and tomorrow, meaningful impact is possible.
Looking inward
You cannot instil confidence in others that the dream is possible without a mindset of growth, optimism and opportunity. A true leader thinks in terms of possibilities, invests in learning and development, and allows mistakes to be made. A growth mindset means being open to criticism and feedback and being willing to keep learning and developing.
Looking outward
From this optimistic mindset, the leader is able to create an environment in which the team and the organisation have confidence in the chosen course and the results to be achieved. The starting point is the potential of people rather than their limitations.
